Principal Scientist - Molecular Diagnostics Product Development

The San Diego Campus is the center of our Diagnostics Solutions Division. With the focus on Molecular Diagnostics, most products produced are utilized onboard innovative and fully automated sample-to-result instrument systems. The consumables required for patient testing are integral to our business. We are seeking a Principal Scientist responsible for initiating, directing and executing complex project(s) to support research and development goals and corporate strategy.
This is a fully onsite position in San Diego, CA.
Technical Responsibilities
- Provides technical leadership to product development teams and directs progress to complete R&D goals and supports corporate strategy.
- Accountable for studies to support finalization of the product design, support scale up of Manufacturing, integration of assays onto automated platform, finalization of software and hardware, assay verification and validation and support for Regulatory submissions.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve complex technical issues efficiently and effectively by exercising sound judgement
- Combines expertise and knowledge to provide innovative solutions to support completion of divisional milestones.
- Ability to drive continuous improvement initiatives
- May represent the Company at conferences (presenting or attending) or in meetings with regulatory bodies or other external entities.
Leadership and Management:
- Demonstrated ability in managing a group of scientists and research associates to achieve project goals. Effectively coaches team members, creates an environment where creativity and innovation flourish and develops high performing teams.
- Develop metrics and measurable goals for the respective team members.
- Identifies resource needs and resolves resource conflicts
- May manage a portion of the project budget in line with corporate guidelines.
- Represents R&D on Core Teams for complex product development projects collaborating with colleagues at all levels from different departments of the organization. Is seen as a leader by effectively managing junior level employees and communicating and collaborating with colleagues at all levels and in all departments of the organization.
- Provides guidance to other departments to ensure success of product launch and on-market products.
- Effectively manage cross-functional relationships and establish clear roles and responsibilities to drive accountability.
- Develops constructive culture and is a positive role model in giving and accepting constructive feedback, create an extended team dynamic of open communication
- Communicates with upper management in regard to multiple projects status, issues and resourcing.
- Contributes to implementing corporate strategy with respect to ongoing and future projects by building realistic plans and communicating them effectively. Manages change to improve outcomes.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Ph.D. Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field,
- M.S. Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field
- B.A. /B.S. Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field.
Experience:
- Ph.D. with post-doctoral research experience and 4-6 years industry experience; Ph.D. with no post-doctoral research experience or 5-7 years industry experience
- Post-M.S. without thesis and 9-11 years of industry experience; or post M.S. with thesis and 8 - 10 years of industry experience
- Post-baccalaureate with 10-12 years of industry experience
Additional Required Skills:
- Technical: Expertise in nucleic acid amplification and detection technologies, scientific method, and statistical analysis. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills and attention to detail. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to concurrently manage multiple projects and deadlines. Must be knowledgeable in all applicable FDA regulations and ISO requirements.
- Manage Execution: Strong leadership and team management skills. Conveys clear expectations for assignments, delegates enough of own work to others, monitors progress of others and redirects efforts when goals are not being met, continually looks for ways to improve processes, products, and/or services.
- Build Realistic Plans: Strong organizational and time management skills. Develops realistic plans, actions steps and timetables for projects and assignments; identifies specific action steps and accountabilities, prepares realistic estimates of budget, staff and other resources.
- Promote Teamwork: Promotes teamwork amongst groups: discourages “we versus they” thinking, facilitates the discussion and resolution of different views; involves others in shaping plans and decisions that affect them; contributes to the efforts of the team’s work.
- Share the Vision: Executes plans and develops strategies for achieving vision; articulates the strategies to team(s) and others; manages people in a constructive manner to achieve strategic goals.
- Make Sound Decisions: Makes timely decisions based on accurate logic; looks beyond symptoms to identify causes of problems and drives team to routinely perform root cause analyses; makes decisions in the face of uncertainty; takes all important issues into account when making decisions, including impact on people.
The annualized base salary range for this role is $126,200 to $210,300 and is bonus eligible. Final compensation packages will ultimately depend on factors including relevant experience, skillset, knowledge, geography, education, business needs, and market demand.
